Parsons School of Design is one of the seven colleges of The New School that is known for its fashion design program. It is located in Greenwich Village in the area of Lower Manhattan in New York City. Aside from its fashion design program, they also offer other programs such as graphics, interior design, and advertising to name a few.

They have educated some of the most famous designers in the world. DKNY was founded by Donna Karan who was educated by Parsons. Designers of signature brands such as Louis Vuitton and even the designer of Michelle Obama’s gown also went to Parsons.

Parons throws an annual benefit that showcases famous fashion icons. This year, on their 68 Annual Parsons Benefit, they had Sarah Jessica Parker and Donna Karan as one of their guests.

Sarah Jessica parker is famous for her character, Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and The City. Sarah wore a Valentino dress to the event and participated in the auction where three people paid $10,000 to go shopping with her for a day at Bloomingdales.

In Dona Karan’s speech she mentioned that she once had to go to summer school because she failed her draping class. Apparently, draping was not at all popular during the 90’s but she joked that her sense of style made her ahead of the trends

DKNY which stands for Donna Karan New York is a fashion house based in New York and was founded in 1984. It caters to women and men’s fashion. Karan is a woman of vision and she believes that it is better to talk to consumers about the latest trends than by showing it to them six months in advance which is usually shown through fashions shows and official websites of brands.

When she first started out in her business she really made it a point to talk directly to her customers. Perhaps that is why her vision for the fashion industry is more advanced than other designers because talking to consumers helps her see from their perspective and helps her understand what styles they like the most and what outfits they would see themselves wearing in the near future.

The name “New York” resembles the fast paced life of New Yorkers. Her pieces are wearable from day to evening and you can mix and match pieces and make them work together anytime of the day.

Her DKNY brand has branched off into several successful labels such as DKNY Jeans, DKNY Active, DKNY Kids, DKNY Junior, and DKNY Men. Supermodel, Cara Delevingne, who can be seen in international ads such as Burberry and Chanel has been the face of DKNY for several seasons already.

Donna Karan has Parson’s to thank for her success in the fashion world. Karan has decided to concentrate more on her philanthropic vision and has partnered with her alma mater for a study centre in Haiti. Back in 2007, she launched a foundation and luxury brand called Urban Zen.

The purpose of the study centre in Haiti is for students to be able to act with the local artisans of Urban Zen.
